Singam review

Banner: Sun Pictures, Big Pictures, Studio Green
Production: Kalanidhi Maaran, K.E. Gnyanavel Rajan
Story, Screenplay, Dialogues and Direction: Hari
Star-casts: Surya, Prakash Raj, Anushka, Vivek
Music: Devi Sri Prasad

A story that revolves around the life of a heroic cop Durai Singam (Surya)

Singam: Mr Dependable who is capable of sorting out any issues arising in and around his jurisdiction is loved by his village men for his upright and fair dealings

Singam faces trouble in the form of Mayil Vaaganam (Prakash Raj) an extortionist, runs ‘Kata Panchayat’ and also makes a nifty through various land dealings, in Tiruvanmayur area of Chennai.

Out of all... his main source of money is through Kidnapping, which the society is unaware of …

Singam gets transferred to Chennai and the movie is about how the cop chases down the badie and puts an end to all his money making networks and finally gets a promotion to a higher ranking official. In between all these there is a love, romance between (Surya and Anushka)

Things that actually work in the movie:
1. Punch dialogues by Dorai Singam and justifying the character through voice modulation and body language
2. Director Hari adopting a racy and action packed screen play.

Were the movie is let down:
1. Vivek’s character as “ERIMALAI” is unimpressive and fails to attract
2. Songs are a real speed breaker to an action packed movie

Coming to music
All songs are just an average, highlight being KADHAL VANDAL sung by Baba Sehgal and Priyadharshini . Lyrics penned by VIVEKA have used metaphor at various places. A peppy number.
“Iduppu Konda Oosi Sirippu Window AC thaan
Paarvai Pattakathi Paayum Ennai Suthi than”

VERDICT: An action packed movie with a predictive story line that is sure to attract  audience and a box office winner, summer special…

PRINCE OF PERSIA: THE SANDS OF TIME

An epic action-adventure set in the mystical lands of Persia... read more read more...

The film is an adaptation of the mega-popular video game  that follows an adventurous prince who joins a rival princess on a quest to stop an angry ruler from unleashing a sandstorm which could bring about the destruction of the world.

Nizam (Ben Kingsley) an evil minded sinister who kills his kin King-Sharaman  and wickedly frames Prince Dastan a former street orphan  adopted by the king –all  part of a plan to seize the crown

Prince Dastan (Jake Gyllenhaal),  attempts to save the world from his evil Uncle Nizam (Ben Kingsley), who thirsts for a magic dagger(Sands of time ) held in a sacred city. The dagger allows the user to move backwards in time: to correct a mistake or shift the course of history

Dastan joins hand with Princess Tamina (Gemma Arterton) who knows a lot more about the mystical power of the dagger(Sands of time ) that can actually reverse the time. Both journey across the desert sands in an effort to keep the weapon safe and to come out clean that he Dastan didn’t kill  King Sharaman

Things that were worth the watch :
1.Parkour stunts : (acrobatic stunts) one which were part of the opening chase sequence  in CASINO ROYALE
2.Dastan climbs a castle wall at night with the help of long-range archers who shoot a trail of makeshift arrow carabineers just inches above his head
3.Snake-loving assassins who join hands with Nizam to kill Prince Dastan
4.Ostrich races that add humor to the film
5.SFX field; use of stop motion
6.CGI( computer generated Imaginary) that captures  luxurious castles, exotic peoples, landscapes , edge-of-the-seat action and many more

No movie can match the spine chilling performance of a game ,yet this adventure  movie is definitely worth the watch

Verdict : ACTION PACKED ADVENTURE , ONE OF THE BEST VIDEO GAME TO MOVIE ADAPTATIONS . A SUMMER TREAT

Semmozhi by AR Rahaman for WORLD CLASSICAL TAMIL CONFERENCE

  Semmozhi by jBALAJi

The song highlights that Tamil is the Semmozhi(The world has only five languages which have  'Semmozhi' status. Tamil is one amongst them.)

Semmozhi status:
It should have been born at least 2000 years ago. It should have literary continuity for 2000 years. And still exists.
2. It should have given birth to other languages.
3. It should have helped the world improving in Culture.

Tamil is the only Indian language which can stand alone with its rich and evolutionary
vocabulary and will continue to be ….
The song highlights the 5 great epics of Tamil literature (ஐம்பெரும்காப்பியங்கள்)
1 Silappatikaram 2 Manimegalai 3 Civaka Cintamani 4 Valayapathi 5 Kundalakesi

Starts of in style with Bharathiyar words and gains momentum with the KADAVUL VAZTHU with smooth acoustic guitar chords coupled with hard hitting Drums to the orchestration

The music is predictive, rousing music that builds gradually; assortment of singers and state/culture/language-specific instruments used for obvious reasons; jingoistic lyrics, again, for obvious and rightful reasons

Finally a fitting song for the “WORLD CLASSICAL TAMIL CONFERENCE” KOVAI

Note:
I love my mother tongue quite adequately and I chose Tamil as 2nd language all through my studies while my peers had fun with Sanskrit and French .Songs of this kind would literally unite Tamil’s all over the globe …

Raavanan Music review

Veera ; An energizing tune .Vijay Prakash (Hosanna fame) is the highlight . ARR has fused Afro style music In layers in this song ( Must listen). The interludes explosive drum arrangements in the song are appealing and pulverizing . Typical ARR style

Usure Pogudhey: An orchestral behemoth with melody free flowing through out the song with guitar riffs is simply awesome (Must listen)

Kodu Poatta;Benny Dayal singing in a raised volume with Instruments like bagpipes, Drums , Trumpets add flavor to this number Mixed with exotic sounds lacks substance , an experimental track from ARR

Kaattu Sirukk; with its methodically ascending orchestration and vocals byAnuradha Sriram, offers instant gratification. Add to that, Javed Ali’s polished vocals, some scintillating interludes

Kalvare; Shreya Ghosal is the highlight coupled with Rahman-template in every note…that semi-Hindustani/devotional, heartfelt rendition, but is also the sole mildly-appealing track sung by Shreya …A melody number in this album, crafted for a soothing and pleasurable listening experience..(Must listen)

Keda Kari;an instant hummable song with hard hitting acoustics and many layers of music hidden that can felt only after multiple listens. The chorus and the arrangement is spellbinding. With plenty of drums, dholak, hand clapping, shenai,  and other folk style dance instruments make it stand apart ..{ Inside news reveal that it took Mani rathnam 4-5 days to complete picturisation of this song with hundreds of dancers }

Raavanan songs are fresh and simple, fascinating and diverse soundtrack that requires repeated listening Mani Rathnam has brought out the best from ARR and clearly he emerges as the DON OF INDIAN MUSIC

SURA REVIEW

Cast : Vijay,Tamanna,Vadivelu,Dev hil(Villain)
Musician : Mani Sharma
Director : S.P.Rajkumar
Banner : Sun pictures

Sura (Vijay) a fisher man who fights for the rights of his people (darling of the masses) , has a dream to construct proper living houses for his men as they are deprived of a proper one . He is in company of his friend Vadivelu. Sura saves heroine Tamannah who tries to commit suicide for her missing dog (GOD WHY DO GIRLS GO SO FAR FOR A DAWG!!!!!)By falling into sea and instantly love blooms between both lead pairs.

In mean time Dev(Villan) wants  the local people to shift to an another place as he wants to build a water theme park and SURA is an obstructer to him , so he plans to finish him. This is where the hero and villain lock horns.

Sura tricks the politician/Villain/Don on all arenas and finally wins over his aspiration dreams. Amidst all these Sura romances, speaks punchy dialogues, fights, dances to songs , criticizes politicians ,does comedy track with Vadivelu  etc….

Finally the movie ends on a good note were the badie dies and proper homes to the people. The movie instigated the Sri Lankan Tamils issue and also the Rameshwaram Fisherman’s plight…

What works for the movie: His dancing skills, action scenes, dialogue delivery will be a hit among the masses. Especially the moves are incredible and spellbinding (must watch). There is a court scene were Vijay tries a TRRajendran is much beyond speculation …
Every thing else is as usual a commercial masala
There is scene where the hero urges the citizens to help handicapped people is worth appreciating.

Verdict : SURA is a treat for Ilayathalapathi fans. Definitely worth watching once …will easily be a good runner .

Baana Kaathadi Music review

Thaakuthe Kan Thakkuthe; Sample sound track. Yuvan shankar Raja composition

  Thaakkuthe Kan Thakkuthe by jBALAJi

Thaakkudhey kan thaakkudhey; Yuvan on vocals is the highlight. Catchy rhythms and stylish composition, craftily composed backgrounds (must listen)

Paithiyam pidikkudhu;  one that is immensely addictive, with youthfully funky sounds. A love song …(must listen)

Kupathu rajakkal; A song that peeks into the life of Chennai slum and their lifestyle , Yuvan has tried some unique sounds in the background .

En nenjil; Sadhana Sargam’s voice is masked by orchestration and drowns this melody number ….Could have been a better one.

Ullaara poondhu; An song that can be said to be composed for an item number seriously leaves you baffled ….

Baana has two tracks than be listened and is fantastic, the rest is just an average from Yuvan Shankar Raja...All songs are crisp and fantastically sound programmed
